Reunion Programming Overview
As Harvard announced in January 2021, due to COVID-19, all Harvard reunions this year will be virtual, and unfortunately we cannot postpone any reunions because of the logistical challenges associated with gathering so many Harvard affiliates on campus at a later date. Thus, the Class of 2016’s official 5th Reunion will be held virtually June 4th - June 6th, 2021.
This announcement came as a disappoint to most of the class, including the Reunion Committee. In our initial discussions and planning meetings we heard loud and clear the feeling of “zoom fatigue” we’d all been experiencing. However, while the class tended to agree that a virtual reunion was less-than-ideal, after some time there also emerged a consensus that a) doing nothing would be worse; b) the 5th Reunion is nevertheless a meaningful milestone, and should still be celebrated in some way; and c) that this could provide an opportunity to rethink our conventional reunion approach and adapt to the digital era.
With this in mind, the committee surveyed the class to solicit perspectives and recommendations, and to design a programming foundation accordingly. During the Town Hall in February we announced that reunion programming will be guided by the following principles:
MINIMIZE Mass VIRTUAL EVENTS
In general, folks are underwhelmed by virtual events and just don’t want to attend that many. Thus, we’ll plan to host a smaller quantity of events overall, but ensure that each one that does happen is high quality. You can read more about our virtual events here.
KEEP THINGS INTIMATE
Nobody wants to be on another awkward Zoom call with dozens of people yet minimal interactions. Therefore, we’ll make sure that virtual events are intimate and conversational as much as possible.
Gather in-person when safe
Most of the class would rather wait to reunite in-person until it’s safe to do so, even if it can’t physically take place at Harvard. As such, we’ll be hosting in-person class celebrations after the virtual reunion weekend, which you can learn more about here. Specific programming for in-person celebrations will be announced during our virtual reunion weekend (June 4-6, 2021).
